About the Azkuna Zentroa Alhondiga in Bilbao

The Azkuna Zentroa, in Bilbao Spain, also known by the locals as la Alhondiga Bilbao, is a multi-purpose historical building, that is located in the heart of the city center. The architect of the venue, Philippe Strack, and the artist Thibault Mathieu decided to collaborate and build in 2010 the building. The place was also named the ‘Cultural and Leisure Centre’, thanks to its destination as a cultural center.

The name of the Azkuna Zentroa was derived from the late mayor of Bilbao Inaki Azkuna, but the other name of the building ‘the Alhondiga’, has another quirky history. In fact, in the past, the place was destined for corn exchange, and the first architect of the center, the Basque Ricardo Bastita, decided to repurpose and honor its late indication. Nowadays, the Akzuna Zentroa is used as a great center, known for its shops, bars, auditorium, showrooms, and also a well-known Azkuna Zentroa Bilbao swimming pool. Azkuna Zentroa Bilbao is conveniently located just a 10-minute walk away from the Bilbao-Abando train station, providing easy access to local and regional transport connections.
